Maria: What do you mean, I killed
her?
David: I'll explain everything in the car.
Maria: Oh, no, I'm not going anywhere with you. No, no, no. Because Brooke
English told me that she was looking for
Maria Grey.
David: You're confused, Maureen --
Maria: The hell I am, David!
David: This is exactly what I warned you about, remember? I told you that your
mind would start playing games on you.
Maria: No, Brooke English told me that she was looking for Maria Grey.
David: You want to believe that because you want to believe Maria is alive. But
she's not, Maureen. Maria is dead. You killed her.
Maria: Are you saying that I made up meeting Brooke English, that that just
didn't happen?
David: I don't doubt that Brooke English tracked you down in Nevada. But as you
can see, Maria Grey is no longer --
Maria: No, no, no, no. You told me -- you told me that I killed a man.
David: I lied.
Maria: Why?
David: To protect you.
Maria: To protect me from what, David? What?
David: Maureen, please try to remember how fragile you are, ok?
Maria: Do I look fragile to you?
David: When I found you five years ago, you were extremely weak, remember?
Physically, emotionally. But thanks to the treatment that I gave you, you were
able to heal.
Maria: I'm not some basket case that you need to protect, David, ok? I have a
right to know what I did so that I know why I’ve been running for all these
years and why I've been hiding. And I need to know how I killed her. How did she
die?
David: You don't need to know that.
Maria: Yes, I do. Please, I need to have my life back, David.
David: That's impossible.
Maria: Why is it impossible?
David: Because -- because you hit her with your car!
Maria: Ok. Ok. You told me that I was in an accident, so -- ahem -- if I hit her
with the car, then it must've been an accident, right?
David: Maureen --
Maria: So then I can just go to Brooke and that guy she's getting to marry and I
can just tell them that it was an accident.
David: No, no! No, you can’t.
Maria: I'm sure the people that live there in that house are probably family of
hers, and they would like to know that so that they can move on, too.
David: No, Maureen, you can't do that.
Maria: No, that's got to be why they came looking for me! Right?
David: The crash wasn't an accident!
Maria: What?
David: It wasn't an
accident, Maureen. You killed Maria Grey because you hated her.
David: I'm very worried about you, Maureen. You're dangerously close to having a
breakdown.
Maria: I just --
David: Now, it's not safe for you to be here.
Maria: I don't remember you -- I don't remember doing what you said that I did.
David: Of course you don't remember because your mind does not want you to
remember, that's all.
Maria: You just have to tell me. You've got to tell me everything, David.
David: You know enough.
Maria: No, you've got to tell me about the crash.
David: No.
Maria: Wait, how do you know so much about it? How do you -- were you there?
Were you there? You must've been there in the car with me.
David: We took separate cars. I was following you.
Maria: Where?
David: Here.
Maria: Here? Here in Pine Valley?
David: Yeah. Yeah, you came here to be with me.
Maria: To be with you? To be with you?
David: Mm-hmm. We were seeing each other, Maureen.
Maria: No, wait, wait, wait. Um --
David: I was very much in love with you. But I made a big mistake, ok? I -- I
had an affair. Now, it didn't mean anything, but of course it meant something to
you. And you were furious with me. And after -- well, after Maria was killed,
you forgot everything. You also forgot that you loved me. So I didn't tell you
that part when I took you away.
Maria: So, this affair that you had was with Maria?
David: Yes. And you wanted to confront her. I tried to stop you. But she came
out of nowhere, ok? She was on the road, you know, on the road out to Wildwind
--
Maria: Ok, so then it was -- so then it was an accident.
David: No, no. You didn't swerve, Maureen. You didn't try to avoid --
Maria: No, no, no --
David: Maureen, you drove right for her.
Maria: No, I didn't.
David: You accelerated, ok?
Maria: No, I did not! What you're saying I did not --
David: You killed Maria in a fit of jealous rage.
Maria: You're talking about somebody else.
David: I saw the whole thing, Maureen. It was -- it was just awful.
Maria: Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
David: All right, I pulled you from the wreckage. I nursed you back to health.
But I couldn't go to the police because I felt so guilty, I felt so responsible,
and because I loved you too much.
Maria: Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you tell me any of this before?
David: Because I tried to spare you.
Maria: About her?
David: She was young, accomplished. She was a mother.
Maria: Oh, no. She had children?
David: Yeah. Two.
Maria: Oh -- oh, my God. Oh, my God. So I --
David: I didn't want you to know any of this, Maureen.
Maria: Wait a minute. So you're telling me I took away somebody's mother because
I was jealous?
David: Now you know why I need to get you away from here. If anyone sees you --
Maria: They'll arrest me, of course. They'll arrest me for murdering Maria.
David: Try not to think so much, Maureen. Let's just get the hell out of here,
ok?
Maria: No. Uh-uh. I -- I can't. I can’t.
David: Where you going?
Maria: I'm going to go to the house and I’m going to turn myself in.
David:
Wait, wait, wait, wait! You can't turn yourself in.
Maria: Yes! I took a mother from her children -- her innocent children!
David: It wasn't your fault.
Maria: But it was my fault. You just --
David: No, I did this, ok? I ruined your life.
Maria: And I ruined theirs, David.
David: No, listen to me -- if you go up to that house, you're going to lose
everything.
Maria: But I already have. You don't understand. It was almost better thinking
that I killed some anonymous man than knowing what I did to this poor woman and
her family.
David: I'm sorry, I’m sorry, I'm sorry.
Maria: I can't live with it. I can't live with it.
David: Listen to me -- I'm telling you, if you go to that house, they're going
to put you in jail for the rest of your life!
Maria: Don't you understand? That's where I belong!
David: No, no, no --
Maria: Yes! Let me make this one thing right, David!
David: You can't, you can't!
Maria: Yes, I can. You don't understand -- my life has got to matter for
something. Do you see the life that I’ve been living?
David: You can't change what's already happened.
Maria: I can change it. Yes, I can. I can change it if I just pay for my crime.
David: You have a child.
Maria: What?
David: That's right. You have a child, Maureen. A daughter.
Maria: David --
David: She looks just like you. Brown hair, brown eyes. If you go to that house
and you tell them what you know, you will never see her again. But if you listen
to me, if you do what I say, you just might.
Maria: A child? I have a daughter?
David: Yeah.
Maria: Ok. Is she ours?
David: No, no, she's not ours.
Maria: Well, then, who's the father?
David: Look, it's really not safe out here. Can we please go inside? Come on.
David: When I first met you, Maureen, you had already been widowed.
Maria: So, I -- I had a husband who's dead?
David: Yes.
Maria: And where is my child now? Who's taking care of her now?
David: All right, let's try to talk about this in a calm way, ok?
Maria: Where is she? And is she ok?
David: If I told you where she was, you would want to see her.
Maria: Yes, of course I would want to see her!
David: I can't allow that.
Maria: Why? What --
David: Because the police are guarding the house.
Maria: So then she's here, then. She's right here at the house.
David: No, no, no. That's not what I said. But the police have been guarding
this house for the past five years now.
Maria: Because -- why, because Maria lived here and then -- so they just -- ok,
they figured that I might come back here.
David: That's right, that's right. So the minute you show up, you will be put in
jail.
David: You said earlier that you trust me, Maureen. Do you still?
David: All right, then I'll arrange for you to see her. Your daughter.
Maria: When?
David: Soon. On one condition.
Maria: What?
David: That you leave this house and you swear on your daughter's life never to
come back here.
Agent: Enjoy.
David: Thanks. One ticket, one-way to Puerto Vallarta.
Maria: David, is there anything else that you're not telling me?
David: Only that I'm sorry.
Maria: Sorry about what?
David: For your suffering. When I found you after that crash, maybe I shouldn't
have played God. But I did save your life, and that should count for something.
Maria: My life, whatever it was, is gone and I don't even remember my child.
David: One day at a time, Maureen. One day at a time.
[Maria remembers the crash – and Brooke]
[Baby cries]
Maria: Maddie? Maddie, Sweet Pea?
Brooke: She's fine. She's fine.
Maria: Maddie, hi. Hi, sweetie. Mommy loves you very much. Mommy loves you very
much, Maddie.
Brooke: Listen, I'll make sure that she's ok. And I'll come back for you, I
promise.
Maria: Brooke has my baby. David, you lied to me. You lied to me.
Pilot: Flight attendants, be seated and prepare for takeoff.
Maria: Stop -- stop the --
Flight attendant: Ma'am, you have to sit down.
Maria: No, I've got to get off the plane right now. Now!
